Chapel Field charges past Roscoe
ROSCOE January 21, 2014 Chapel Field outscored Roscoe 19-4 in the fourth quarter to break open a tight game and claim a hard-fought 55-39 OCIAA Division 6 victory in Roscoe.
With Chapel Field (4-5, 2-0 OCIAA) ahead by just one point entering the final quarter, Kevin Goss immediately connected on a three pointer to increase the lead to four. From there Elias Oquendo took over, scoring 11 of his team-high 21 points in the final eight minutes.
Roscoe started the game sluggishly, spotting Chapel Field a 15-7 lead. But then Rob Taurino heated up for Roscoe, scoring 10 of his team’s 12 second quarter points to keep the Blue Devils within a nine-point deficit at halftime.
Roscoe turned up the defense in the third quarter and used balanced scoring from Taurino, Brad Dreher and Collin Tallman to outscore Chapel Field 16-8 and close within one.
Chapel Field coach Joe Canazon warned his team that Roscoe was going to give them a challenge.
“It comes down to heart and hustle, that’s what’s going to win this game,” implored Canazon to his team.
His team responded to his urging, kicking it up a notch in the deciding fourth quarter.
“It took us a while to get up the intensity while Chapel was able to come out early and get ahead,” said Roscoe coach Fred Ahart. “I’m very proud of how we played going into the second half, but Chapel Field was able to take it down the stretch.”
Taurino finished with 21 points to lead Roscoe, which dropped to 2-7, 0-2 OCIAA.
