Are you ready to clap, sway, sing and dance like you did 60 years ago? Are you ready to have a smashingly good time with music that many of us grew up with? Music that’s lovingly familiar to those of us of “a certain age”?   

It’s “Beehive, the 60s Musical” created by Larry Gallagher and directed by Shadowland Stages’ talented Managing Director Brittany Proia, with choreography by Andrew Geller Karl and musical direction by Noel Carey. 

Backed up by the “Beehive” Band comprised of Noel Carey, Nathan Perry, Mike Siktberg, Paul Miller, Larry Balestra, Mike Aiese, Lou Scott, David Winograd and Steve Greenfield, six women celebrate the songs that helped make the 1960s into what PBS calls “the most historically and culturally complex decade in America.”

“Beehive” celebrates the decade’s female artists with over 30 songs like “Somebody to Love,” “One Fine Day,” “To Sir with Love,” “Then He Kissed Me,” “Be My Baby,” “Me and Bobby McGee,” and the ever popular “It’s My Party.” 

With stellar harmonies and strong vocals, actors Brandi Knox, Liz Neitge, Jasmine Crosson, Amy Knips, Lizzy Cenicola and Jasmine Lawrence keep this musical revue moving and the songs flowing with nonstop energy. And all the songs are interspersed with short narratives about events that took place during the oftentimes tumultuous period. 

It’s a rowdy, joyous, boisterous, festive and sometimes poignant salute to rock and roll’s formative years. And because it’s a family friendly musical, you certainly don’t have to be a senior citizen to enjoy it. 

Song after song moves the audience to cheer, tap their feet, and sometimes sing along, especially with audience favorites like “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” (lead - Amy Knips), “You Don’t Own Me” (lead - Liz Neitge), “Proud Mary” and “Natural Woman (lead - Jasmine Crosson), “You Can’t Hurry Love” (lead - Lizzy Cenicola), “One Fine Day” (lead - Jasmine Lawrence), and the song that starts the celebration “The Name Game” (lead - Brandi Knox).

Adding to the authenticity of the period are Chris English’s sparkling and “flower power” ‘60s costumes, and Cindy Johnson’s splendid wig designs, including, of course, a beehive.
