MONTICELLO – Call it a lucky tip.

HBO Location Manager Stephen Grivno was in Ulster County looking for locations for the filming of a new five-part mini-series called “The White House Plumbers.”

That’s when Ulster County Sheriff Juan Figueroa told Grivno that Sullivan County had an old jail that might fit the bill.

“It was beautiful,” Grivno said of the 100-year-old former Sullivan County jail in the center of the Village. “It is very similar to the jail in Washington, D.C.”

Yesterday, nearly 200 cast and crew members descended on the Village of Monticello, bringing with them more than a dozen trailers, tents, tables, chairs, cameras and all the necessities needed for the approximate three-day shoot.

“We were happy to include Monticello into our family of locales,” Grivno said. “And we would enjoy coming back, everyone here has been wonderful.”

A huge presence was felt on Broadway, Monticello as the parking lot on the corner of Broadway and St. John Street was turned into a staging area, complete with campers, restrooms, and an assorted number of tractor trailers.

Monticello Mayor George Nikolados said, “I think everyone [in the village] is reacting very positively. The crew is very professional. It’s not really affecting traffic at all, just bringing excitement to the village. We feel good. It’s good to have this much movement in the village. It’s nice to see the village businesses being patronized by the crew.”

Grivno said the crew contained many Hudson Valley ‘locals’ from Westchester, Rockland and Orange counties as well as Metropolitan New York and Long Island.

He said some of the crew was staying locally and patronizing local businesses for food and shopping.

“We’re so excited that HBO has chosen the Sullivan Catskills as one of the locations for this exciting new mini-series,” stated Roberta Byron-Lockwood, President/CEO for the Sullivan Catskills Visitors Association.

“This will have a positive impact on our region as it brings business and visitors here and is a wonderful economic driver,” she said. “Additionally, the New York State Film Tax Credit Program allows companies to benefit from tax incentives for both production and post-production costs.

“The Sullivan Catskills are near New York City and other metro areas while still providing the beauty of natural landscapes and charming small towns perfect for telling the next great story,” she added.

What’s the show about?
According to Variety, “The five-part series tells the story of how President Richard Nixon’s own political saboteurs and Watergate masterminds, E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and G. Gordon Liddy (Theroux), accidentally toppled the presidency they were zealously trying to protect. The cast also includes Domhnall Gleeson as John Dean and Lena Headey as Dorothy Hunt.

Most recently it was announced that Kathleen Turner would join the series. Rounding out the cast are Kiernan Shipka, Ike Barinholtz, Yul Vazquez, David Krumholtz, Rich Sommer, Kim Coates, Liam James, Zoe Levin, Tony Plana, Zak Orth, Nelson Ascencio, Tre Ryder, Gary Cole, Toby Huss and John Carroll Lynch.

“The White House Plumbers” is based in part on public records and the book ”Integrity” by Egil “Bud” Krogh and Matthew Krogh. “Veep” writers and executive producers Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck created the series and will executive produce. “Veep” showrunner David Mandel, who is currently under an overall deal at HBO, will executive produce and direct all five episodes.

The series will be a co-production between HBO and Wiip. Ruben Fleischer and David Bernad will executive produce for The District along with Paul Lee, Mark Roybal and Nne Ebong for Wiip. Frank Rich will also executive produce, alongside Len Amato for Crash&Salvage and Gregg Fienberg. In addition to leading the series, Harrelson and Theroux will executive produce.
