Borscht Belt Historical Marker Project announces unveilings

SULLIVAN COUNTY — In an effort to capture the legacy of the area’s illustrious tourism industry, the Borscht Belt Historical Marker Project is prepping to unveil five more historical marker signs this summer.

There are currently four already that signify momentous locations that stretch along the Borscht Belt. Founder of the Marker Project, Marisa Scheinfeld said the goal is to reach 20 markers in total.

The Borscht Belt Marker Project is a group comprised of local artists and historians who share the drive to celebrate and honor the famed era via the creation of a large scale historical marker trail.

Mark your calendars for these upcoming dates and locations:

May 25, South Fallsburg; The 5th historic marker dedication at 6:30 p.m. will partner with the Borscht Belt Deli at Landau’s Park followed by a screening of the documentary “The Catskills” at the historic Rivoli Theater.

June 13, Kiamesha;

The 6th historic marker dedication at 6:30 p.m. will take place outside the Alder Hotel at Resorts World Catskills and will honor the Concord Hotel, Breezy Corners Bungalow Colony and the hamlet of Kiamesha Lake.

– July 21, Hurleyville;

The 7th historic marker dedication at 1 p.m. will feature a literary and arts expo celebrating the Borscht Belt era. Stroll the small businesses on main street, visit the Sullivan County Historical Society and stop by “Author Row” featuring books and illustrations about the Catskills. Then grab a ticket to Sam Sadigursky’s performance of The Solomon Diaries at the Hurleyville Performing Arts Centre (HPAC)at 3:00 p.m.

– August 17, Bethel;

The 8th historic marker dedication at 2 p.m. at the Kauneonga Lake Gazebo on Woodstock anniversary weekend, lakeside with a 1960s and 70s musical backdrop. Bethel Woods Museum will be on site recording oral histories.

– August 25, Woodridge

The 9th historic marker dedication at 2 p.m. will be  followed by music from Outlier Inn, kosher pastries and conversation.

“Our markers are colorful and bold, and are complimented by QR codes and images,” Scheinfeld said. “When complete, the trail will be united by a self-guided audio driving tour. Our hopes are to take our audience on a literal roadmap through history.”
