Getting focused at the FocusNY photography convention

Marc Farb offered tradeshow attendees an opportunity to try out lenses.
CALLICOON — Shutterbugs descended upon Callicoon for the Professional Photographers' Society of New York's FocusNY convention at the Villa Roma Resort and Conference Center. The returning event featured three full days of classes, instructional shootouts, a tradeshow and more.
Attendees were encouraged to participate in a friendly photo competition on Saturday that was open for observers to watch in person silently or livestream from the Tivoli Lounge where discussion was welcome. The competition was designed to pin point participants' strengths and weaknesses. Prizes were awarded for the best images.
Students fought back tears as instructor and keynote speaker Jessica Lark provided examples of how to move potential clients into booking and buying images.
“That feeling that you have right now” said the portrait artist and author, “tell me the value of that,” proving that marketing is much more than just unbeatable price lists.
The free tradeshow gave photographers the opportunity to talk directly to vendors about equipment and some even allowed them to bring their lenses for a test run around the room.
Embracing the importance of education, high school and college students were offered a day pass free of charge with a student ID in hand. “PPSNYS has challenges in our future and a great deal of enthusiasm in our younger membership,” said Monroe Payne, PPSNY President.
The event ended on Monday evening with a banquet and award show.
