Catskills Farmers' Markets celebrating Fall harvest

LIBERTY - When summer ends, many farmers' markets are at their peak. That's the message behind the “Fall for Farmers' Markets” celebration - going on now at all seven markets in the Sullivan Catskills Farmers' Markets collective through the end of September.
Most markets are open through September and October - and the Callicoon Farmers' Market is even open year-round, indoors. The complete market schedule along with Fall for Farmers' Markets events, details, and directions can be found using the market locator at

“We want to educate our community and remind them that the Catskills' growing season goes strong through late autumn. Our markets are overflowing with apples, squash, potatoes, pumpkins, greens, herbs, onions, fresh-cut flowers - and items like tomatoes, carrots, and zucchini that many people assume are just ‘summer' vegetables,” said Melinda Meddaugh, Agriculture and Food Systems Team Leader of Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County.
To help the community incorporate these local fruits and vegetables into their diet, the collective is providing six different recipe cards, available for free at each market: from no-cook dill pickles to fresh salsa, and roasted root vegetables to apple pumpkin muffins. The recipes make it easy to shop for most of the ingredients right at the farmers' market!
The Sullivan Catskills Farmers' Markets collective also stresses that shoppers will find far more value for their dollar at the farmers' market: all products are in season, locally grown, and fresher than what's in stores. In fact, 9 out of 10 shoppers, surveyed by Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County in 2016, agree that farmers' market food is fresher and tastier than store-bought. The collective is continuing their “Spend Ten” campaign at the markets, asking the community to pledge to spend just $10 at a market this year. As a thank you for their pledge, shoppers can pick up a free gift at the market (tote bag, sticker, jar opener, magnet, or other giveaway).
The opportunity to Fall for Farmers' Markets is open to everyone! Those receiving benefits can use them at select farmers' markets to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables. SNAP/EBT/Food Stamp benefits and Farmers Market Nutrition Program checks (for WIC mothers and seniors) are welcome.
