LIVINGSTON MANOR - ‘Eye of Newt' takes home top prize in Sour Beer category and two other beers entered win Silver and Bronze
Catskill Brewery is honored to announce that all three beers entered by the brewery for judging at this year's annual TAP-NY Craft Beer and Food Festival in Hunter, NY took home medals. Catskill Brewery is a craft brewery located in Livingston Manor, NY and this is the first time they've submitted any beer into a competition. The brewery's entries were:
In the Sour Beer category-
Eye of Newt, a Flanders Red Ale, took the Gold Medal. Eye of Newt is barrel-aged and indulgent. A delicate, delicious version of this classic style. 6.
5% ABV.
In the Light/dark/strong Lagers category-
Ball Lightning Pilsner, a Czech-style pils took the Silver Medal. Ball Lightning is a crisp, clean lager with bright, accessible flavor that culminates in a satisfying Saaz hop bite at the finish. 5.5% ABV.
In the Strong Belgian Ales category-
Freak Tractor Wild Ale was awarded bronze. From our wild beer series, Freak Tractor is made with 100% Brettanomyces yeast, and delivers a unique combination of earthy notes and a hint of tropical fruit. 6.4% ABV.
Catskill Brewery's head brewer Caleb Brown said, “We are extremely proud to be recognized amongst our talented peers who, as a community of brewers, are making outstanding beer. This is the first time we've ever had our beers in a competition and we chose these to enter because they represent the cornerstone of a variety of styles we really love to make AND to drink. At the brewery, we always dream about the things we want to drink and enjoy as a starting point, knowing that our standards will translate to something our customers will really connect with.“
Catskill Brewery produces a wide range of beers, including barrel-aged and specialty beers, while promoting and helping preserve the Catskills and its natural environment. The brewery's tasting room is open most evenings and weekends and sells beer by the glass, growler and keg.
One of the greenest breweries in the country in both its systems and practices, the building, which has recently been awarded with the LEED GOLD certification, is heated and cooled by geothermal, powered by solar, and features a green roof, permeable driveway pavers and an electric car charging station. Brewery co-founder Randy Lewis said, “We've been quietly brewing up some great beers - sours, barrel-aged as well as sessionable ales and lagers, all in an eco-friendly building. We're a great example of how to create a premium brand using sustainable production methods in a rural area.” The brewery is efficient in energy and water use, and re-purposes spent ingredients which are used by local farmers as animal feed.
TAP NY Craft Beer and Food Fest over the years has developed into New York State's largest craft beer festival in the number of brewers attending. This year's event was held April 28-29, 2017. The festival invites brewers of hand-made beer.... not beer that is rushed through the brewing process to get it on the shelf as quickly as possible, but beer that celebrates the unique processes and passions of the individuals who call it "craft-brewed".
