FORESTBURGH — The Town of Forestburgh will have two of the Sullivan Catskills Visitors Association (SCVA) Peace Doves this summer and will be included in the Dove Trail for the Woodstock 50th anniversary celebration.

At the February 7 town board meeting, it was announced that Forestburgh resident and Monticello High School Fine Arts teacher Brenda Sywalski will be the artist for the town dove.

“I am very happy and honored to be chosen to create the design for the Forestburgh Peace Dove, and it has been a lot of fun already,” said Sywalski.

According to Forestburgh Town Supervisor Dan Hogue Jr., the dove will be located behind the Forestburgh Veterans Memorial at the end of the St. Josephs Hill Road.

“I asked her to capture the essence of Forestburgh ... she came up with a really cool rendition,” said Houge Jr. “So that project is moving forward. She will be working out of her house, and we will be providing her with the paint and materials.”

The Peace Dove will be a permanent structure weighing about 150 pounds and will stand five feet tall and seven feet wide.

“I collaborated with Dan, the Town Supervisor, who requested that a Bald Eagle is [to be] included because Forestburgh is the 'Winter Home of the Bald Eagle,' as well as a Spruce tree, which is our signature tree,” said Sywalski.

“Other elements such as the reservoir, the forests, woodland animals, and the log cabin are a part of the heritage and beauty of Forestburgh.”

According to the SCVA, the design guidelines for the painting of the doves will emphasize the colors and the themes of the 1960s.

Sullivan Renaissance will provide special grants to aid communities in “bringing life and color to their doves.”

The Forestburgh Sullivan Renaissance volunteer group, Blooming Buddies, will help provide beautification efforts at the dove site.

The painted doves have to be installed by May 23 according to the SCVA.

Equally important, The Forestburgh Playhouse will host a dove on their grounds giving Forestburgh two stops on the Dove Trail.

“The Forestburgh Playhouse is thrilled to announce that it will be hosting a dove on the Sullivan Catskills Visitors Association Dove Trail,” said Forestburgh Playhouse Producer Franklin Trapp.

“Travelers from far and wide will be able to follow the trail, discover the magic of Sullivan County and, along the way, discover the Forestburgh Playhouse.”

Sullivan County artist Keith Philips was commissioned to design and paint the dove at the Forestburgh Playhouse, according to Trapp.

“The Playhouse will be collaborating with Perennial Gardens/Gay Donofrio to enhance the dove with beautiful landscaping,” said Trapp. “The Playhouse will be regularly posting updates as to the progress of the dove on Facebook and Instagram.”
