MONTICELLO — The Bishop of New York, the Right Reverend Andrew M.L. Dietsche, was a welcomed presence and honored guest at the St. John's Episcopal Church in Monticello this past Saturday morning.

Bishop Dietsche, who was consecrated a bishop in March 2013, was accompanied by the choir of St. James' Church in Goshen to celebrate St. John's Bicentennial Celebration, marking 200 years of service to God and the community.

The St. James' choir opened the worship by walking down the center aisle to the altar, followed by Bishop Dietsche, singing “The Church's One Foundation.”

Bishop Dietsche's sermon spoke to the long and innate history of when the church was initially constructed, the hard work of its worshippers, and its continued service in the community since its founding.

“We are celebrating a moment in time on this day. Two moments really,” said Bishop Dietsche, “the Spring of 1816 when heroes of the faith founded this incredible church and the Spring of 2016, in which we celebrate its 200th year in existence.”

When St. James' choir began singing “Jubilate Deo” shortly after, gasps of appreciation were heard and smiles spread across the congregation as the beauty and harmony of the moment seeped in, filling the church with light and warmth.

Shortly following the communion of the people, the blessing and dismissal, Rev. Diana S. Scheide, the Vicar of St. John's, announced that a luncheon would be held in the undercroft of the church for all to enjoy, on behalf of St. John's and the three churches of The Delaware Catskill Episcopal Ministry.
