Doug Solomon nominated for Newburgh police chief

Says he'll step down in Monticello if appointed

MONTICELLO — Village of Monticello Mayor Doug Solomon has been nominated as Police Chief for the City of Newburgh. City of Newburgh Manager Mike Ciaravino announced the nomination on Monday.

Solomon is a former police chief in the Village of Monticello and currently serves as the police chief for the City of Beacon. The position in the City of Newburgh has been vacant since chief Mike Ferrara retired in January 2015.

Ciaravino said that Newburgh's Civil Service Commission would have to review Solomon's qualifications because of changes to the civil service requirements since Solomon originally took his civil service exam.

If he takes the job, Solomon would have to relocate to Newburgh. He confirmed in that scenario he would eventually step down as Mayor in the Village of Monticello. “It's tough trying to do both jobs [Beacon police chief and village mayor],” Solomon explained. “This new position requires a lot of time and responsibility. Trying to stay on and split my time wouldn't be fair to the people of Monticello.”

Solomon was appointed Mayor in the Village of Monticello back in May, 2015, after then-mayor Gordon Jenkins was removed from office following several instances of alleged misconduct.

Depending on when he steps down as mayor in Monticello, it's unclear if his replacement would be appointed or elected in March 2018.

“First and foremost, Doug needs to do what's best for him and his family,” Village Manager David Sager said. “If he steps down I wish him well. We'll navigate these new waters as a board and continue to do what's best for the Village.”

Solomon said this will be his last week as police chief in the City of Beacon. He stated that he had planned to retire from Beacon before news of his nomination for police chief in Newburgh.
