MONTICELLO — On Martin Luther King Day, the Sullivan County Chapter of the NAACP hosted “A Salute to Greatness,” a tribute to Dr. King at the Ted Stroebele Recreation Center in Monticello.
It featured newly installed NAACP President Sandra Cuellar-Oxford, and it was put together with a lot of help from NAACP member and Monticello resident Janette Williams.
The well-attended event featured various skits, spoken word performances and a very special performance from none other than the SCORS Steppers, who delighted the audience with their hip hop stylings, with music provided by DJ Shaka-T.
“No one wanted to let this day pass without recognizing Dr. King,” said Cuellar-Oxford. “His work, non-violence, Civil Rights... especially in light of all the tension and the conflict that we here and the young people in this community are facing and older people just don't know how to deal with. You know, you open up the paper and you know what's happening. I believe that non-violence is more important today than it was back in the day.”
Asked why she worked so hard to put the event together, as she related, in just a few weeks time, Williams said simply, “It's time for unity... it's time for unity in this community and beyond.”
