LIBERTY — Board members and school administrators from across the county recently visited the Rubin Pollack Education Center in Liberty for Sullivan BOCES' Annual Meeting. Those in attendance were able to take tours of the campus, and get an inside look at the different programs and activities offered.

Artwork created by students in the Special Education Program lined the hallways for all to enjoy, while culinary students weaved around the crowd offering some tasty appetizers to all the guests on hand.

In groups, board members and administrators were given a tour of the different classrooms of the Career and Technical Education Center where students were able to discuss and showcase their work. One example includes members being treated to a virtual welding machine in the Auto Body classroom, where students can learn the basics of metal welding without the risk of danger from a real welding machine.

After the tour, board members and administrators were treated to a dinner provided by the culinary students who were darting in and out of the main dining room, setting up the wide variety of food options for guests to enjoy.

“I was so impressed by the students,” said Kevin Callagy, Business Official at the Livingston Manor and Roscoe Central School Districts.

After a brief introduction by BOCES Board President Linda Berkowicz and BOCES Superintendent Robert DuFour, the Career and Technical students who were present were acknowledged.

Soon after, candidates for the 2018-2019 election to the Sullivan BOCES Board of Education were formally introduced, and they included Linda Berkowicz, Fallsburg CSD; Linda Fisk, Livingston Manor CSD; and Simmie Williams III, the At-Large member.

To end the evening, Sullivan BOCES Deputy Superintendent Susan Schmidt presented the proposed 2018-2019 budget for the upcoming school year. The school board members from each component district that makes up Sullivan BOCES will be able to vote on the administrative part of the budget on April 17.

“I think we need to create more awareness of BOCES through the partnerships through the schools…the possibilities are endless for students in different careers,” said Monticello Central School District board member, Susan Purcell. “Every time I come to one of these I am more amazed and tonight seeing them [students] in action in different settings not only showcasing their work, but seeing them do the work, it's great. You see the students taking ownership for their work.”
