COCHECTON — The Cochecton housing market seems to be heating up in early 2018 compared to last year, according to some preliminary data.

At last week's Town Board meeting, Code Enforcement Officer Gregg Semenetz reported that 10 municipal searches were filed in January 2018 while there were approximately 50 such searches filed for all of 2017.

Supervisor Gary Maas also reported that a new digital sign was installed on Mueller Road that records each driver's speed. Aside from the driver knowing his or her speed, Maas said the Town can also read the data to get a better handle on speeding trends that could help law enforcement. The road runs from Route 17B to Kenoza Lake.

In other news, Council member Paul Salzberg said that Lake Huntington recently created an association and is trying to locate funding to remove algae that is estimated to cost $20,000. He said that although it's a private lake, there is one section that has public access.

"It is definitely not the town's responsibility for us to fund the clean up," Maas said on Monday. "State laws state we can not gift any money to private corporations, associations or any private entity."

The Board also recessed a public hearing until March 14 regarding an additional property that would be brought into the Lake Huntington sewer district.

Maas opened the meeting by asking everyone to pause for a moment of silence to remember the victims of the Fort Lauderdale-area school shooting earlier that day that killed 17.
