Three hundred and seventy-seven people.

That's how many runners and walkers participated and crossed the finish line of the Allyson Whitney Run for Love 5K Saturday morning in Kauneonga Lake, and more than 700 people had signed up.

People from all walks of life came together to walk and run not only in support of the Allyson Whitney Foundation, a non-profit organization that strives to empower and fight for the interests of young adults with rare cancers, but also in memory of loved ones that have been lost.

“This year we're participating in memory of a really good friend, Cali Black,” said Joanna Gass, who was participating in the race with Lee ‘The Great Kazoo' Karasik. “She passed away just three weeks ago from cancer. She was such an amazing, good person, and she was really artistic.”

A plastic bag containing an original art piece by Black was pinned to Gass' jacket.

“This was actually a card that she had created for her mother,” explained Gass, while taking refuge from the rain inside the Kauneonga Lake Fire House just before the race began, “and it's just so beautiful. I thought it would be a good representation of her.”

The Allyson Whitney Run for Love 5K is one of the Foundation's biggest fundraisers of the year, helping to raise money for rare cancer research, to supply HOPE comfort bags to patients, and to provide individuals with what they call ‘life interrupted grants' that help ease financial burden so each person can place more of their focus and energy on healing.

The Foundation was created in memory of Allyson Whitney Strong who was just 25 when she was lost to a rare small cell cervical cancer.

So far the Allyson Whitney Foundation has given $80,000 to research and $269,000 in grant awards.
