SULLIVAN COUNTY — Results of grades 3-8 math and ELA tests, taken by students this past spring, were recently released by the New York State Education Department.

In comparison to 2016, the percentage of Sullivan County students who took the test and were deemed proficient in math and English language arts increased by one percentage point in both subjects.

Three county school districts - Liberty, Sullivan West and Tri-Valley - showed increases in both math and ELA, as compared to 2016.

Liberty showed a five percent increase in ELA and a four percent increase in math; Sullivan West was one percent higher in ELA and jumped seven percent in math, while Tri-Valley had a five percent gain in ELA and also jumped seven percent in math.

Sullivan West had the highest percentage of proficiency of county schools in both subjects (43 percent in ELA and 49 percent in math). Also, their eighth graders were ranked 18th in the state for ELA test scores, with 63 percent deemed proficient.

“We are so proud of our students and staff at Sullivan West,” Sullivan West Superintendent Dr. Nancy Hackett said. “Each year we work with faculty and staff to align the curriculum vertically and build on the prior knowledge. Working individually with students, we are able to design supports for each of them as they go from one grade level to the next.

“Not just using one measurement but multiple measures, we continue to teach and expand the worlds of our students,” said Hackett.

Livingston Manor was second in ELA at 38 percent, and was tied with Tri-Valley in math, with both schools at 34 percent.

“The teachers and principals are working really hard at aligning their instruction with the standards, which I think has had a positive impact on how our kids have done on the state assessments,” John Evans, Shared Superintendent of Downsville, Livingston Manor and Roscoe Central School Districts said.
