Firefighters called to Grandview Palace

LOCH SHELDRAKE — The sound of sirens filled the evening air around Liberty and Loch Sheldrake on Wednesday as dozens of fire engines raced to the scene of what was reported as an active four-alarm structure fire at the former Grandview Palace Condominium complex on State Route 52 around 5:37 p.m.

“We had smoke coming from the windows of a few of the apartments and from the back of the building,” said First Assistant Chief of the Loch Sheldrake Fire Company Pete Carey.

Carey said the fire primarily involved one room and was contained within one hour. No injuries were reported.

Fire police closed the road around 1500 State Route 52 and redirected traffic toward Hurleyville or through the SUNY Sullivan Campus.

Firefighters and fire investigators stayed at the scene for a few hours afterward to try to determine the cause of the blaze.

Officially, the building is supposed to be unoccupied. According to Carey, in the past, the Fallsburg Police Department has responded to reports of people illegally residing there.

Carey said firefighters did not encounter anyone at the scene by the time they arrived.

On April 14, 2012, Grandview Palace was the site of a much larger fire that burned down several buildings and caused severe damage to 396 units within the condominium. Over 43 fire companies and some 300 firefighters were called in to quell the flames.

Before becoming condominiums, the property was the site of Browns Hotel -- a nationally renowned resort and one of the most popular destinations in the Borsch Belt era from the 1940s through the 1980s.
