Fallsburg teacher's aide/coach saves life

FALLSBURG -- Less than two weeks after Fallsburg Coach/Teacher Dominick Scanna saved the life of a kindergartner at Benjamin Cosor Elementary School, Teacher's Aide and Junior Varsity Girls Basketball Coach Lucille Carter-Harris used the same manuever -- the Heimlich -- to save a student's life.

On January 31 during fifth grade lunch in the cafeteria, Harris, who works as a one-on-one aide in Mr. Bendell's class, helped the student she's assigned to get situated with their lunch.

Another student yelled for her to help, as a fifth grade girl was choking on a piece of her sandwich. Harris calmly spoke to the girl and told her about the procedure [the Heimlich Manuever] she'd have to perform. The sandwich came out on the first try, and the student thanked Harris and gave her a hug.

Harris, like Scanna, learned the manuever in required coaching courses she's been taking the past 13 years.

“I prayed while I was doing it,” she says. “I asked God to give me the strength to help her and everything I was trained to do came into play. It was nerve-wracking.”

But thankfully the potential crisis was averted due to her quick response.

“I told her we had to go to the nurse for her and for me,” Harris said.

“Lucille Carter-Harris is a quiet person with a giant heart and a giant love for our kids,” Fallsburg Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ivan Katz said. “On that fateful day, Ms. Carter-Harris jumped into action, with her coaching training to support her, and saved a child's life. As Superintendent of Schools I am so proud to have people in the Fallsburg Central School District, like Lucille Carter-Harris, who make the well-being of our children priority number one. Lucille Carter-Harris made a difference in a child's life that day...I couldn't be prouder.”
