Lumberland honors Camp Simcha Director

GLEN SPEY - The Town of Lumberland Board recently held their monthly meeting, with all members in attendance. Supervisor Jenny Mellan presented a proclamation for Ben Brown of Camp Simcha.

During winter storms Riley and Quinn, the Town of Lumberland was without power and the Town Hall and municipal buildings were particularly effected by downed lines and trees. Ben Brown, Director of Operations at Camp Simcha, a Project of Chai Lifeline, opened their doors to residents for heat, wifi, a private place to sleep, facilities, and much more.

Camp Simcha is a tuition free camp that allows 430 medically complex or chronically ill children to attend camp every season. The only Kosher camp of its kind is located in Glen Spey.

Brown was touched by the recognition. “I am humbled and honored,” he said. “It is truly an honor to be in a wonderful town. This is what we do, we've been doing it for our kids all of these years. I am honored to be counted amongst people I consider heroes, the Lumberland Fire Department, Highway Department, the town employees, people went door to door to pick up neighbors and bring them to Camp, or to check on them…It was beautiful to see families together, neighbors meeting one another. I hope we never have to do this again but if we do, know that we are here for you.”

Also at the meeting, the board moved to conduct a reserve fund transfer for the Highway Department, to authorize training for the Town Clerk, to enter into a River Corridor Trash Pickup Agreement, to support welcome sign purchases, to appoint a Court Clerk, to provide a stipend for the prior Court Clerk to provide training, to approve new applications for Pavilion and Circle Park use, to appoint a member to the Cemetery Committee, and to enter into a copier lease agreement.

The Town did not act on a resolution to permit the use of the ball field for Mackenzie Elementary School's PTA Walk a Thon because the event was cancelled. Supervisor Mellan explained the process for evaluating the new copier agreement, and the cost savings the Town would see over the five-year lease. They also discussed the purchase of four new welcome signs for the town would be through a grant secured by Frank Schwarz covering 75 percent of the cost. The Cemetery Committee appointment still leaves one vacancy, but should provide the committee with a quorum for meetings.

Before recessing the meeting, the Board reviewed old and new business and the monthly abstracts. Business included an open constable position with applications being accepted through June 4th, and that the West Mohican Lake Road rubbish cleanup will be addressed after the Town Cleanup on May 19th.

Code Enforcement Officer Dave Sparling will report with an update after the cleanup day, giving the property owner an opportunity to utilize the cleanup day for disposal.

The Town of Lumberland will hold their annual Memorial Day Observance on May 28 at 10 a.m.
