Saving lives in the 'Cinderella Courtroom'

MONTICELLO — For Richard B., Joshua B., Anna G., Michael P. and Nicole S., Tuesday, August 18 marked the end of a long journey and the beginning of a new chapter in their lives.

Graduating from the Sullivan County Drug Court and for Richard B, the VetTrack program, all have been given a second chance and an opportunity to avoid jail. All participated voluntarily in the 18-month program and most importantly, all had to come face to face with their personal struggles with addiction.

Speaking to the graduates, their family and friends, honored guests and all who make the program possible - the Drug Court Team - County Court Judge Frank LaBuda explained that during the course of the program, the courtroom they are sitting in becomes a different place.

“Each Tuesday, this room is transformed - it becomes a Cinderella Courtroom - giving people a second chance and an opportunity for rehab and recovery to those who need and truly want it,” he explained.

One of the first Drug Courts in New York State, Sullivan County's program was implemented 12 years ago. There are two graduating classes each year, with 4-8 participants in each class. While that doesn't seem like many people, LaBuda explained that by far, the people who participate in the program do not become recidivist statistics.

“We know from our experience in the criminal justice system that prison and jail do not cure addiction,” he explained.

Today, there are Drug Courts in every county in New York and in most states throughout the country. In Sullivan County, the program requires a cooperative effort between the Sullivan County Court system, District Attorney's Office, Legal Aid, the Probation Department, the Department of Family Services, Sullivan County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services and the Recovery Center.

In addition, Sullivan County offers the VetTrack Program, which offers special assistance specifically to military veterans who have gotten caught up in the criminal justice system. VetTrack builds in services tailored specifically to veterans' needs and utilizes the resources of Sullivan County Veterans Service Agency as well as the above-mentioned agencies.

“Drug Court is a team effort and a gift to our community,” said Scott Samuelson, guest speaker and chairman of the Sullivan County Legislature. “It takes a community to take care of everyone inside of it. For those who are coming though the program, this is an exciting time in our county to be making a new start. We are also on the road to a new beginning and opportunities are beginning to emerge. It's a great time for us, and it's a great time for you.”

The story of Cinderella is a tale of transformation, of good conquering evil, of new beginnings and happy endings - all elements of this important program.

“On a personal note, having been a judge for 20 years in Sullivan County, this is one of my more pleasant responsibilities - to help people who need and want and deserve the help with their issues.”
