Waterlogged waders nearly claim fisherman at Junction Pool

ROSCOE — A college student nearly died in a fishing accident Saturday at the world-famous Junction Pool in Roscoe.

The 911 call came in around 7 a.m., and emergency responders arrived to find a 21-year-old man blue, unresponsive and not breathing. He had been brought to shore by fellow fishermen.

According to the State Police report, William and Lori Fenner of Emerson, NJ were fishing at Junction Pool when they noticed the young man go under, his hip waders filling with 45-degree water.

The unidentified man was part of a fishing club visiting from SUNY's College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse.

Unable to breathe while weighed down in the water, he fell unconscious and floated into Junction Pool - but since everyone else there was wearing waders, too, he couldn't be quickly rescued.

The downstream rapids finally brought him towards shore, where he was fished out. However, none of the witnesses either knew or attempted CPR.

Troopers Michael Schroeder and Andrew Digsby arrived and with Roscoe Fire Chief Keith Travers began CPR, whereupon the man spit up large amounts of water and laboriously started breathing on his own.

The Roscoe-Rockland Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported him to Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris, where he regained consciousness and was treated for water inhalation and hypothermia. He's expected to make a full recovery, said police.
