YOUNGSVILLE -- When the fire whistle goes off and the pager rings, a volunteer firefighter is ready to take the call. One Youngsville fireman is being recognized for his dedication to the department and his community.

On May 21, Kris Rasmussen Jr. received the Gerard J. Buckenmeyer Volunteer Scholarship through The Firemen's Association of New York (FASNY). Out of 104 applicants throughout New York State, 26 recipients were chosen, and Rasmussen is the first Sullivan County resident to be awarded the $1,500 scholarship.

“Really, it feels good doing it,” said Rasmussen, reflecting on his four years of volunteering with the department. During this time, he was able to become part of the ice rescue team and become certified in diving. After Rasmussen graduates from Sullivan West this June, he will be going to SUNY Delhi for welding.

Chan Rivera, the Director for FASNY, presented Rasmussen with his scholarship. Rivera is part of the Napanoch Fire Department, and was proud to see a student from a neighboring county receive recognition for their hard work.

“We are very proud to have him here,” Chief of the Youngsville FD Jonathan McGibbon said. “He's dedicated to the community, he's always willing to learn something new.”
