MONTICELLO — Law enforcement is investigating the murder of a man at the Shaker Heights apartments in the Village of Monticello over the weekend.

According to Lt. Mark Johnstone, the Monticello Police Department received a call shortly after 3:30 a.m. on Sunday morning reporting a body outside on a grassy area of the apartment complex.

The male victim suffered two gunshot wounds to the head and was declared deceased by 4:15 a.m., according to Trooper Steve Nevel, public information officer for State Police Troop F in Middletown.

Police are withholding the identity of the victim until they can notify his immediate family.

The NYSP's Forensic Investigations Unit processed the scene but MPD is retaining the investigation. NYSP's Bureau of Criminal Investigations is assisting MPD along with the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office. Police are releasing few details at this time and the investigation is ongoing.

It's not the first time police have been called to the area to investigate a violent crime. In August of 2017, MPD was called to the Monticello Meadows Apartments on Shaker Heights Road to investigate the murder of Betty Evans, 74. That homicide is also still under investigation.
