Creamery coming to SUNY Sullivan

LOCH SHELDRAKE — Two new businesses will soon be applying for the Start-Up NY program and are using SUNY Sullivan as their sponsor.

The Board of Trustees approved the resolution to let SUNY Sullivan sponsor the Catskill Creamery in order to create a facility on 18 acres of the college campus on Route 52.

The college has stated, “The business will be able to meet the needs of farmers, farm groups and other entities desirous of manufacturing dairy products.”

Applying for the Start-Up NY program would qualify the business for several state tax benefits.

The creamery looks to create a modern facility whose primary use will be pasteurization, separation and homogenization of raw milk purchased from milk cooperatives in order to produce cheese, yogurts and various other dairy and non-dairy related products.

Additionally, the creamery is looking to have a close relationship with the college by serving as a on-campus laboratory that will let students view and learn about the production of milk.

In a letter to SUNY Sullivan, Town Supervisor of Fallsburg Steven Vegliante said, “The Town of Fallsburg is enthusiastically supportive of this potential project. Agriculture-based businesses supporting our local farmers makes the project more beneficial for the town.”

According to SUNY Sullivan President, Jay Quaintance, the creamery will also establish a water treatment plant in order to clean and filter the water used by the facility. The water, once treated, would be able to go back into the town's water supply system thus creating a green wastewater facility. The creamery looks to offer 36 jobs during its first year of operation at the campus.

In the same fashion, the college agreed to sponsor Goodness Grainless LLC, which will also apply for the Start-Up NY program.

The company is looking to occupy a space in the Narrowsburg Union that has been designated as a Start-UP NY space for the college.

Goodness is looking to establish a bakery within the Union where production of gluten, grain and allergen- free products will be made. They will also be distributed from this location to grocery stores which includes, “Whole Foods,” airports, arenas, speciality food stores and amusement parks and many more.

Moreover, the bakery would also like to have a working relationship with the college by providing internships to their students as well as offering workshops and other programs to teach students about their products.

The company wants to be the catalyst of achieving health and wellness with using food as opposed to pharmaceutical solutions to various health issues.

Equally important, Goodness Grainless LLC wants to employ at least five full-time employees during its first year of operation and will actively seek employees from the recent graduates of SUNY Sullivan's Culinary Arts and Pastry Arts programs as well as be a part of SUNY Sullivan's job fairs.

Both companies are awaiting approval from the Empire State Development in order to qualify for tax benefits from the state.

If approved both companies look to operate for 10 years with tax benefits ranging all aspects of their businesses. Some tax benefits businesses would have, according to Start-Up NY website, include being able to apply to the tax department to receive a credit or refund for sales tax, and use taxes paid for goods and services used or consumed by the business's operation. Employees hired for and whose jobs are certified as net new jobs in a tax-free area will pay no state or local income taxes for the first five years.”

And for real property taxes, “Leases of real property in a tax-free area to an approved business are exempt from the New York State real estate transfer tax.”
