WOODRIDGE — The two miles separating Woodridge and Mountaindale may soon showcase the efforts of more than a dozen artists.

The Town of Fallsburg is welcoming submissions from interested artists through Friday, August 8, after which they'll select around 15 for placement along the trail following the former bed of the New York, Ontario and Western Railway (O&W).

Winners will have their variation on a four-foot-wide peace sign mounted and displayed at a point on the trail or in Woodridge or Mountaindale itself - ergo the name of the event: the Town of Fallsburg “Peace Walk.”

“The idea is to have an interactive outdoor art exhibit,” explained Dali Levy, who's coordinating the effort with a group of volunteers. “We chose the peace sign because we wanted to promote peace and coincide with the Woodstock festival.”

Her husband, Fallsburg Supervisor Steve Vegliante, got the idea from the ubiquitous cow sculptures in New York City, horses in Saratoga Springs and fish in Baltimore.

“They became tourist attractions on their own,” he noted.

So later this year, those strolling, jogging, biking or Segway-ing along the Woodridge-Mountaindale trail will not only be able to view the artists' handiwork but take “selfies” beside each one. Posting the pictures on the Peace Walk's Facebook page will enter them into a contest for a stay at The Sullivan in Rock Hill and tickets to a Bethel Woods concert.

After two to three weeks on display, the signs will be auctioned off, with proceeds split between the artists and the nascent Fallsburg Art Commission (FAC).

“It's a launch event to start the FAC,” Levy said.

The town board has already created the commission, and Vegliante predicted the five members will be appointed by the end of the year.

“We'd like to develop a pool of money and add to it every year” to support artistic events and installations, he explained. “This has to be self-sustaining.”

But right now, what's needed most are artists for the Peace Walk venture. To find out more, visit www.facebook.com/peacewalk2014 or call 434-8810, ext. 5.
