Casino Impacts Subcommittee to return

MONTICELLO — Legislator Jonathan Rouis confirmed Friday that the County Legislature's Casino Impacts Subcommittee is being resurrected.

Rouis said the subcommittee will largely consist of the same members who spent last spring discussing potential impacts from the Adelaar resort and Montreign casino.

A year ago, it wasn't at all certain that Montreign would land the sole casino license the state ultimately handed out in the Catskills/Hudson Valley, but Rouis said the “lay of the land” is better understood now, thus prompting a return of the subcommittee.

“We'll make our way through the issues one at a time,” he predicted, anticipating discussions on the resort's impacts on infrastructure, schools and social services, among other topics.

A June meeting is in the works, though no date has yet been set.

Roundabout coming

Legislators in the Public Works Committee on Thursday tentatively authorized County Manager Josh Potosek to execute an agreement with McFarland Johnson Inc. to review designs for a new roundabout at the intersection of Joyland Road, County Route 173 and Route 17's Exit 106.

Initially drawn up for Louis Cappelli's derailed casino dreams, the roundabout - a smaller version of a traffic circle, similar to two roundabouts in Liberty - will serve both local traffic and that bound for the Montreign casino and Adelaar resort. Indeed, the resort's main entrance road is currently being built to the intersection with the roundabout in mind.

McFarland Johnson will review the design and inspect the construction on behalf of the county, with the $200,000 cost to be covered by Adelaar/Montreign's developers, not the county.
