Fallsburg and BOCES join forces

FALLSBURG — Henry Ford once said, “Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress and working together is success.”

The Fallsburg Parks and Recreation Department and Sullivan County BOCES have taken those first steps toward success. They're working together at Morningside Park so that Fallsburg could have a successful rental cabin season in 2020.

The students at BOCES's Construction Technology Program are building camping cabins on the shores of Morningside Lake.

Previously, Fallsburg Manager of Parks and Recreation Arnold Seletsky had built the rental cabins at the Parks and Recreational workshop.

“I called them no-frills cabins,” said Seletsky. The cabin includes four-person bunk beds, fans, and electricity.

For the upcoming year, Seletsky wanted to do something different and called upon Sullivan County BOCES to help.

Fallsburg's Town Councilman Joe Levner brought the idea to Sullivan BOCES and connected Seletsky with Construction Technology Program Teacher Bill Drasher.

“It was a good opportunity for the kids to build something from the ground up,” said Drasher.

Building the cabins gives BOCES students an opportunity to learn different aspects of carpentry and home construction.

The BOCES team had success in the past working with Fallsburg Athletic Department to build dugouts.

BOCES students built the cabins in sections back at their school campus, Drasher said. “They build them inside so the weather would not interfere with the construction.”

Once that is completed, BOCES then transports the sections, roof, and walls, to the site by the lake.

The cabin is built on a base that is provided by the Parks and Recreation Department.

BOCES students construct the cabins on-site under the supervision of Drasher.

The new cabins, when finished, will be 12x14 feet and include such amenities as ceiling fans and a refrigerator.

“This is a perfect example of how our students are involved in real-life work that supports our community. We are incredibly proud of the work that Mr. Drasher and his students are doing on this, and many other exciting projects,” said Executive Principal of the Career and Technical Education Program Scott Palermo.

The cabin campsite will be ready to go for the 2020 season, with each rental having a lake-view.

Seletsky saw potential on Morningside Lake. He looked at other townships offering cabin rentals, and asked himself why Fallsburg couldn't do the same.

Seletsky cleared the land to create cabin sites overlooking the lake.

Each site will have a fire pit and grilling station.

Campers will have access to the 100 plus acre lake where they can canoe, kayak, or fish.
