Kellams Bridge closed for repairs

FREMONT — Residents traveling across the Delaware River between Stalker, Pa. and Hankins will need to find a new way home in the immediate future.

Kellams Bridge is closed for repairs and won't open again until June. The one-lane suspension bridge was built in 1990 and has a current posted weight limit of 11 tons.

A 22-mile detour loop has been established through Callicoon and across Bridge Street.

The $4.49 million project, which was planned nearly a year ago, includes a full deck replacement and other structural repairs.

Workers will fully remove and replace the open grate steel deck, replace steel beams to extend the life of the new deck, make repairs to bridge elements and abutments and repair the damaged guide rail for overall improved safety.

The New York Department of Transportation (NYDOT) defines a structurally deficient bridge as one with a state condition ranking of less than ‘5'. Kellams Bridge currently has a ranking of 4.72, according to the NYDOT.

A deficient condition ranking means that deterioration has occured at a level requiring corrective maintenance. It doesn't necessarily mean that the bridge is unsafe.

The bridge will need to be closed once again after Labor Day.
