Mom thanks all for aiding her and her baby

COCHECTON CENTER — Valeriee Campfield and her baby boy's luck turned from good to bad - and then back to good - in mere seconds on Thursday.

That morning, while headed north on County Route 115 outside Cochecton Center, Campfield's 2013 Dodge Dart hydroplaned and skidded off the road into a brook.

“It started filling with water,” Undersheriff Eric Chaboty said of the car.

Campfield's airbag did not deploy, and badly injured about the face and head, the Eldred resident got out of the car to seek help.

Meanwhile, 10-month-old Gavin was secure in his child seat - but the water was rising.

“It didn't get high enough to get him wet,” said Chaboty, “but it did cover the floor.”

At that moment, Stanley Rolston - a Beach Lake, Pa. firefighter - was on his way past.

“He sees her crawling out of the ditch, and she flags him down,” Chaboty related.

Rolston quickly retrieved Gavin from the car and provided care to both mom and son while they waited for emergency responders.

The Lake Huntington and White Lake fire departments responded, as did the Sheriff's Office, the Cochecton Ambulance Corps and MobileMedic.

Campfield was LifeFlighted to Westchester Medical Center, while baby Gavin was taken to Catskill Regional Medical Center as a precaution.

On her Facebook page, Campfield thanked everyone who helped her in the minutes and days that followed.

“I'm feeling much better and [was scheduled to] get surgery on Sunday, as I've fractured many places in my left face - mainly my eye orbit and nose.

“Gavin, on the other hand, is perfect, and I got to watch him run around Westchester today stealing the hearts of everyone who lays their eyes on him.

“I am beyond blessed for everyone who helped me yesterday, and if I ever find a way to repay you, I promise I will.

“Thank you for your prayers, thoughts and encouraging words.

“I'm blessed to be alive.”
