2019-20 School budget results

Residents throughout Sullivan County's school districts went to the polls on Tuesday to vote proposed budgets, elect school board members and, in some cases, decide on important capital improvement projects.

ELDRED

Eldred CSD voters approved the $17.1 million 2019-20 school budget, with 324 voting for it, and 56 voting against it.

Also on the ballot was a proposition for the Sunshine Hall Library funding of $15,200. That also passed, to the tune of 329 voting yes, 64 voting no.

Four people ran for three available seats on the Board of Education. Stacey Kuhn (five-year term), Kristen Smith (three-year term) and Joana Dutcher (one-year term) received the most votes and will serve on the board.

ELLENVILLE

The Ellenville CSD's $52.8 million 2019-20 proposed school budget was approved by voters. There were 436 people for it, 180 against it.

Also, Jody Little, Julius A. Collins Jr. and Geneva May received the most votes and will serve on the school board.

FALLSBURG

Fallsburg CSD voters approved the school's proposed $46.4 million budget for 2019-20, with 133 in favor of it and 62 who voted against it.

Debra Barbiani and Arlene Hussey were re-elected to the school board. Fiorella Muscia was also elected to the school board.

LIBERTY

Residents of the Liberty Central School District approved the district's $48.4 million budget proposal by a vote of 312 to 58

Voters also approved a no-cost referendum which allows the district to transfer no more than $350,000 from its general fund to its capital fund in order to replace the Liberty Elementary School's gymnasium floors. There were 302 who voted in favor and only 63 who opposed.

“We want to thank all those who took time to vote today. We're always so grateful for the community's support,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Augustine E. Tornatore said.

Voters reelected three candidates for three open board of education seats: Matthew DeWitt, Philip Olsen and John Nichols.

Matthew DeWitt, Philip Olsen and John Nichols will begin serving their terms on the Liberty Board of Education on July 1, 2019.

Livingston Manor

Livingston Manor Central School District passed their $17.1 million budget by a vote of 210 to 57.

There was one seat open on the Livingston Manor School Board. James Buck won election with 190 votes against Jennifer Gorr's 67.

Monticello

Monticello Central School District (MCSD) voters approved the district's $91.2 million 2019-20 school budget 603 yes to 451 no votes.

“I want to thank each of the Monticello residents who had their voices heard at the polls today,” Superintendent Tammy Mangus said.

Yet voters decided to reject the $85.5 million capital improvement project known as “Classroom 2020 Phase II.”

With 499 voting yes and 559 no, the project to make extensive repairs and renovations throughout the district buildings fell short by 60 votes

“While we are disappointed in the results of the Classroom 2020 Phase II referendum, the Board is appreciative of all of our constituents who took the time to consider our vision for the future of Monticello Central School District,” Board President Lori Orestano-James said.

By a vote of 592 to 459 , voters approved the creation of a $10 million capital reserve fund, similar to a savings fund, that would be built over a 10-year period and that could be used in the future with voter authorization to finance needed repairs.

Five candidates sought election to five open board of education seats and ran unopposed. The candidates, in ballot order were Wendy Galligan-Weiner, Jennifer Holmes, Helen Jersey, Lori Orestano-James and Atacey Sharoff.

PORT JERVIS

Voters in the Port Jervis Central School District approved the proposed $75.1 million2019-20 school budget. There were 456 votes in favor of it, 202 against it.

Also, Brian Dewey, Kayla Finan and Tanya Parker-Hughes received the most votes and will serve on the school board.

Roscoe

The proposed $9.3 million 2019-20 Roscoe Central School District budget was approved by voters, 88 to 21.

Gary Dahlman was re-elected to another three-year term on the Roscoe CSD Board of Education.

sullivan west

The Sullivan West CSD's $38.3 million 2019-20 proposed school budget was approved by voters, with 368 voting yes, 111 voting no.

Juliete Gaebel, Rose Joyce-Turner and Ken Cohen were re-elected to the school board (three-year terms).

TRI-VALLEY

Voters in the Tri-Valley Central School District approved the $34.8 million 2019-20 school budget to the tune of 296 yes, 179 no.

Also, Keri Poley, Erin Mentnech and Joseph Colon were re-elected to the Tri-Valley Board of Education. Their terms are three years.
