Rockland adopts commercial solar moratorium

Posted

LIVINGSTON MANOR — Like other townships in Sullivan County, the Town of Rockland recently passed a moratorium on commercial solar arrays.

A public hearing took place last Thursday to discuss whether there's a need to halt the creation of solar energy plants until zoning laws can be adapted.

Developmental and governmental pressures have increased in the Town of Rockland, and a six-month moratorium was passed to allow for time to develop appropriate zoning laws.

“We want to make sure to take care of everybody and put them [solar plants] in the right place,” explained Rob Eggleton, Town of Rockland Supervisor.

According to the new law, penalties will be enforced on commercial solar companies that try to build during this time. Penalties include fines up to $1,000 or six months in jail.

“The zoning laws should be adapted long before the six months are up,” said Eggleton.
