Solemn remembrance in Mongaup Valley

A crowd that included Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther and Sullivan County Legislature Chairman Scott Samuelson came out on Thursday for the Smallwood/Mongaup Valley Fire Department's annual 9-11 Memorial commemoration. Because of the rains, the solemn ceremony was conducted inside the firehouse on Ballard Rd. and not, as is usual, at the Memorial Garden which includes the names of departed members of the department as well as a 9-11 memorial topped by a beam recovered from the World Trade Center ruins. The keynote was given by member John Scanlon, whose nephew Scott McGovern died in the terror attacks that day at the WTC.
