Three to challenge; Edwards won't run

SULLIVAN COUNTY — Though final choices are months away, the race for the nine Sullivan County Legislature seats has already begun.

Eight of the nine incumbents have told the Democrat they're running for re-election.

Only District 6 Legislator Cora Edwards, part of the Democratic majority, has firmly decided not to run again, making this her first and final term (see her letter of explanation in the letters section).

Who Democrats might put up in her stead is unclear, but County Republican Committee Chair Dick Coombe confirmed retired Sullivan County Sheriff's Lt. Luis Alvarez is on track to be the GOP's candidate. (District 6 covers much of the Town of Liberty, the entire Village of Liberty, and a western portion of the Town of Fallsburg.)

Coombe also confirmed that Callicoon resident and former Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce President Terri Ward will bring a Republican challenge to Democratic incumbent District 5 Legislator Cindy Gieger. (District 5 encompasses the townships of Callicoon, Delaware and Fremont, plus a large western portion of the Town of Liberty.)

And on Saturday, Monticello businessman and Republican Jeff Siegel announced he'll be challenging Democratic District 8 Legislator Ira Steingart to represent portions of Monticello, Thompson and Fallsburg.

Every incumbent legislator that doesn't yet have an announced challenger will have one, promised both Coombe and County Democratic Committee Chair Darryl Kaplan (speaking, of course, about the seats not already occupied by one of their own).

• District 1 is represented by Democrat Scott Samuelson of White Lake

• District 2 is represented by Democrat Kathy LaBuda of Wurtsboro

• District 3 is represented by Republican Kitty Vetter of Willowemoc

• District 4 is represented by Democrat Jonathan Rouis of Burlingham

• District 7 is represented by Democrat Gene Benson of Glen Wild

• District 9 is represented by Republican Alan Sorensen of Rock Hill

Barring a primary election beforehand, voters will make their choices known this November, and the new crop of legislators will take their seats next January.
