MONTICELLO — A public bus route could be coming to the county as soon as this summer. At the Public Works committee meeting on Thursday, a plan was presented with a proposed route in the works.

County Manager Josh Potosek said the proposed plan has two routes. Route A Local would have stops in Liberty, Ferndale, Harris, Monticello, Resort Area, South Fallsburg, Hurleyville and Loch Sheldrake. It would run from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with service at each stop every two hours. There's also a Route A Express. Route B Local would run from 8 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. with service at each stop every two hours. And there's also a Route B Express from 6 a.m. to 7:45 a.m.

According to county Director of Communications Dan Hust locations were based on the safety of the pickup spots and existing shelters, the location of employers, and the clustering of homes and apartments. There are 17 stops in total.

Potosek said they had two goals in mind when coming up with the routes: to get people to their jobs and to healthcare facilities.

The estimate for financial expenses for 2020 operations includes $407,952 for the contract, and $82,000 for the call center/dispatch for a total of $489,952. The estimated funding sources include $229,952 from the county share, $125,000 from operating savings, $75,000 from the New York State Department of Transportation and $60,000 from fares for a total of $489,952.

Potosek said they are hoping to go live in June and July and they will monitor and evaluate the routes.
