SULLIVAN — In light of the recent tax changes passed by the Republican majority led congress, changes have been made to the amount of deductions on your income tax.
President Donald Trump's $1.5 trillion tax overhaul ends the unlimited federal deduction and will now only allow deductions up to $10,000 in combined property and state and local income taxes.
The town tax collector cannot, under NYS law receive money prior to a tax warrant being in hand and signed by the County authorizing collection of taxes. Chairman of the Sullivan County Legislature Luis Alvarez signed that tax warrant on December 22 and the warrants were delivered to the tax collectors of Sullivan County's 15 townships, which allowed them to accept taxes before 2018.
“It was very busy, I stood in the office late and worked during the weekend so people could pay their taxes,” said Donna Akerley, Tax Collector for Fallsburg.
A similar sentiment was felt by Debra Gabriel the Tax Collector for Bethel. “I opened my office on December 26 to lots of phone calls and walk- ins non-stop and fielding questions,” she said. “I was happy to step up to the plate. I always like a challenge and we got it done. My highest praise goes to our credit card company, The Satellite.”
