Two Monticello locals arrested for assault and robbery

SULLIVAN COUNTY — The Sullivan County Sheriff's Office has arrested Melissa Strain, 28, of Monguap Valley and Terrell Staten, 31, of Monticello for a robbery that occurred on Sunday, October 7. On that date, the two suspects were at the residence of an acquaintance on Cold Spring Road in the Town of Thompson when Staten held a box cutter to the victim's throat while Strained stole the victims money. The victim spotted the suspects on Wednesday, October 10 walking in the Village of Monticello and notified police. Monticello Police notified the Sheriff's Office and deputies interviewed the victim who said that he had been afraid to report the crime. Monticello officers then located the two suspects and turned them over to deputies. Some of the victim's property was recovered. Melissa Strain and Terrell Staten were both charged with the Felonies of Robbery 1st degree, Assault 2nd degree and the Misdemeanors of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Criminal Obstruction of Breathing and Petit Larceny. They were arraigned before Town of Thompson Judge Sharon Jankewicz on Thursday, October 11 and committed to the Sullivan County Jail in lieu of $75,000 bail. They were due back in court on Monday, October 15, at 5:00 p.m.
