Tri-Valley taps Fallsburg's Williams as superintendent

GRAHAMSVILLE - Michael Williams was a general music teacher in the middle school of the Tri-Valley Central School District at the start of his career in 1992.

At Tuesday's meeting of the Tri-Valley Central School Board of Education, Williams was appointed as their new Superintendent of Schools.

“I'm excited,” Williams said. “I started my career there, so it's like I'm coming full circle.”

According to a press release, the board chose Williams for his passion for public education, established instructional leadership, strength in collaboration and his commitment to providing students with a well-rounded education. He'll begin his tenure as the Superintendent at Tri-Valley on July 1.

The Tri-Valley school board conducted a rigorous superintendent search, which began in November of last year.

The board conducted focus groups and community surveys to provide input on the desired qualities of their next superintendent. Consistent themes shared included a desire that the next superintendent had served as a building level leader, a leader who was approachable/accessible and innovative. Residents wanted someone who could articulate a clear and consistent message, as well as someone who believed in public education. Williams was cited for his ability to work collaboratively with school administrators and staff, and as someone who could build trust.

A resident of Liberty, Williams has served as principal of the Fallsburg Junior/Senior High School for the past 10 years. His experience in education also includes positions in the Liberty CSD where he served as a music teacher and Hancock CSD where he served as the principal of the junior/senior high school.

Williams is good friends with Fallsburg Superintendent Dr. Ivan Katz, Shared Superintendent of the Downsville, Livingston Manor and Roscoe Central School Districts, John Evans, Hancock Superintendent Terry Dougherty and Andes Superintendent Robert Chakar.

“I've taken advice from all of them,” Williams said. “They are my resource network.”

Williams noted that it was time for him to take the next step, if the opportunity presented itself at the right school district. He has many fond memories of his time at Fallsburg.

“It's bittersweet that I decided to go,” Williams said. “I love it here. The faculty and staff are so dedicated to the kids. It's a great environment to both grow up and learn in.”
