Monticello senior Steve Bello finished 16th out of 249 of the state's best runners at the Federation Cross-Country Championships at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls.
WAPPINGERS FALLS -- Exceeding expectations in a humongous way, Monticello senior harrier Steve Bello and sophomore Evan Waterton performed amazingly well at this year's Federation Cross-Country Championships, both earning medals.
To put things in perspective, the Federation Race is extremely competitive featuring the top runners from the NYSPHSAA Championships vying against the elite runners from NYC's Public-School Athletic League, the Catholic High School Athletic Association and the New York State Association of Independent Schools.
In a nutshell, the field is comprised of the best of the best. In all, 249 runners graced the starting line and at race end, Bello crossed the finish line in 16th place in 16:36.60. He was the second fastest runner of the Section 9 entrants.
Waterton was 23rd in 16:41.80. Waterton was the fourth fastest sophomore in the state. He was the third fastest runner of Section 9's 16 entrants. Prior to the race Bello was seeded 37th and Waterton was seeded 70th.
So much for the credibility of such projections. Congratulations to both runners.
