Three SC girls made it to round two of the Section IX Girls Golf Championship Tournament held at Apple Greens Golf Course. Left to Right: Hayley Weiner, Taylor Roseo and Montana Schmidt.
Highland — There were nine Sullivan County girls golfers competing in the Section 9 Championship at Apple Greens Golf Course in Highland.
The two-day event started Monday with an 18-hole round and the top 18 invidual golfers advancing to Wednesday's championship round.
Only three Sullivan County golfers made it to the second day of competition. Taylor Roseo of Roscoe (52-48 - 100), Montana Schmidt of Sullivan West (54-46 - 100) and Hayley Weiner of Fallsburg(54-46 - 100), all tied at 100 strokes, just making the cut for the Championship Round.
“Montana has made better decisions around the course,” explained Sullivan West coach Pat Donovan. “Those decisions have turned into lower scores this year.

On Wednesday the three girls were unable to qualify for States (only the top 9 make it). Sullivan West's Montana Schmidt (97-100 - 197) finished 15th, Fallsburg's Hayley Weiner (114-100 - 214) finished 17th, and Roscoe's Taylor Roseo (115-100 - 215) finished 18th.
Fallsburg coach Brian Garber said, “Hayley was a great role model for her younger teammates this entire season. We're really going to miss her next year."
The Sullivan West Girls Golf team won their division, automatically qualifying their top four golfers for sectionals. In addition to Schmidt, Gabby Cohen (52-52 - 104), Emily Gaebel (59-65 - 124) and Sydney Hermann (64-78 - 142) represented Sullivan West during the first round of sectionals.
Tri-Valley's Kaylee Poppo (59-65 - 124), Roscoe's Caitlin Evans (69-59 - 128), and Liberty's Corinne Hellerer (78-60 - 138) all missed the cut for the second day.
Sullivan West has won the division for four consecutive years, and as a team they placed third in sectionals.
