151 Years Ago... The Sullivan County Record was “born” in 1873 (see inset), a mere 151 years ago. The newspaper began in Youngsville in 1868 with the title Callicoon Local Record, later moving to Jeffersonville. Editor-publisher William T. Morgans was then a young man in his 20s, growing his family just down the road from Inderlied’s tannery. The bustling hamlet of Youngsville also featured slate sidewalks at one time, which can be seen in this photo, postmarked 1909.

In the swim—then and now: This vintage photo of the lake at Jeffersonville is possibly a century old or older, from a local photographer whose name has been lost to time. To the left (outside of the frame) was the hotel that perched on the rim of the lake, above a large parking area and an adjacent roped swimming area. At the time this image was recorded, the lake was a welcome source for recreation, though its dam’s fate could not be foreseen then. Even now, those concerned about the lake are awaiting results of a flood study to determine what the future may hold.
