44th annual race raises 'Monster' sum for local vets

MONTICELLO — For 44 years, the Monticello Rotary Monster Run Classic 5k/10k has been a staple of racing in the Sullivan Catskills, and it has been one of the longest-running races in the county.

The race returned to where it all started, near the grounds of the former Monster Golf Course where the race got its name from and now where the Resorts World Catskills now calls home.

Hundreds of racers and walkers from across the tri-state area descended upon the Sullivan County hallow grounds of a by-gone era to race and help the Sullivan County Veterans Coalition as part of Sullivan County Patriots Day.

According to Monticello Rotary Club President Brad Rutledge, “Too many of our veterans need assistance with heating, food, transportation for medical services, rent and mortgage assistance, just to name a few. They have given to us all through their service to our country. Monticello Rotary is glad to sponsor this race to raise awareness and funds to give back to those who served and are currently serving.”

This year, the Sullivan County Veterans Coalition benefited not only from the race but also from a concert held at the Alder Hotel in Monticello by country singers Pearl Clarkin and Rafe Wester. While the concert was free, a donation was suggested to help the Sullivan County Veterans Coalition.

“The concert was great,” said Monticello Rotary Club’s Les Kristt, who co-chairs the event with fellow Monticello Rotarian Orshii Boldis.

Kristt went on to say, “We got all these wonderful people standing in the parking lot ready for this race and walk right at Resorts World Catskills, and everybody’s very excited about this race.”

Before the race started, Pearl Clarkin sang the National Anthem.

As the sun broke from the clouds, the racers and walkers took off from under the shadow of a giant American flag that was held up high in the air on a Monticello Fire Department truck.

Aileen Gunther, NYS Assemblywoman for the 100th district, said she had been participating in the race for close to 30 years.

“I’m just glad to be here. It’s important to be part of our community; we’re all concerned citizens,” said Gunther.

Gunther added that the veterans have been having a hard time with access to the care they need medically and said her office is doing what they can to help the veterans and says races like the Monster Classic help raise funds to help meet the veteran’s needs. “This helps them a lot,” said Gunther.

Bill Rieber Jr., Town Supervisor for Thompson, said that the Monticello Rotary Club does a “fantastic job just keeping things together and keeping the tradition alive. It’s a great tradition for Monticello [and] for the Town of Thompson and brings vitality and new people.”

According to Kristt, the Monster Classic raised approximately $21,000. The overwhelming majority of the funds raised, around $15,000, will be donated to the Veterans Coalition, while  around $6,500 will support various other local Rotary charities.

Monster Classic hosts, Resorts World Catskills, came up with approximately $10,000 to support the fundraising effort. This included Bob DeSalvio, President of Genting Americas East, which owns Resorts World, writing a personal check of $5,000.

“The entire weekend went relatively smoothly,” said Kristt, “and our members were fabulous. Resorts World Catskills truly lived up to their partnership with the Monster Classic. They helped us in any fashion they could to make the weekend  a success financially and fun for everybody involved.”
