West Sand Lake

To the editor:

With trout season soon to be upon us, I thought I might share with the readers of the Democrat this piece of mine:

BEAVERKILL

Opening day is coming up fast;

Snow is gone: water is down.

I’m thinking, “Trout!”

My thoughts take me back

More than a half century

To my early trout fishing days.

Trout fishing days spent on the BEAVERKILL...

Mecca for the purist fly fishers;

Paradise for a young boy!

Beaverkill water has always been crystal clear,

Ideal habitat for trout...

Ideal training ground for young fishermen.

Plying Beaverkill waters for trout

With live bait, spinning lures and flies,

I learned how to catch both browns and brookies.

I remember a 5 lb brown caught at Charlie Allen’s...

Three pounders caught in Dauch’s Eddy & Secret Pond

Along with many eating size trout caught all along the river.

I remember a four pound brown from Sliding Rock

and several 2 pounders pulled from the Stuhmiller Hole.

Such memories never fade away.

I’m ready for the April 1st opener

As I remember many from my past.

I’m ready...I’m in a BEAVERKILL state of mind!
