To the editor:
My family recently attended a Memorial Service held by the Sullivan County Volunteer Firefighters Association to honor 2021 fallen Volunteer Firefighters. Firemen from all over the county, bagpipers, clergy and officials made this event very special to so many families.
My Dad, Arthur Hassis, a firefighter for 63 years was one of those honored. As children it was such fun to go to the parades to watch Dad march with his Company but in our living room his boots with bunker pants sat in a pile prepared for the next fire whistle. This was a serious reminder of the service he and so many others give to their community.
Thank you to all that made this wonderful event possible and a special thank you to Dad’s brothers of the Jeffersonville Fire Department for your escort, kindness and dedicated service.
