ROSCOE -- Family, friends and the Roscoe community gathered on a somber Thursday morning at the athletic field that “Coach” Fred Ahart paced the sidelines of for 51 years to celebrate the life of a man who had made the town his own.

The field was so crowded that there could have been a football game going on, and it gave former players and the Roscoe community a chance to thank ‘Coach' for all the life lessons he had instilled in them throughout the years.

“The man was amazing,” remarked Bill Hendrickson, a former player, assistant coach, and friend of Coach. Ahart brought Roscoe with him wherever he went, and as Hendrickson added, “He was Mr. Roscoe.”

Coach had many phrases over the years that have stuck with his former student athletes. A few examples of these idioms are “Respect all, fear none,” “The next game is the most important one,” and “Mental toughness.”

“He enjoyed life and everyone that was in it,” Ahart's daughter Katie said. “And he loved all of you, thank you all for being here today.”
