Acting Monticello Chief addresses recent shootings

MONTICELLO — Acting Police Chief David Lindsay was asked by the Village Board of Monticello to present to the public some of the recent shootings in the village.

He spoke in particular of the two shootings over Memorial Day weekend – one incident in Evergreen Apartments on the 25th of May and the other incident in Sleepy Hollow on the 28th.

“As many of you probably know the incident in Sleepy Hollow was, unfortunately, a fatal shooting,” Lindsay recalled.

At this time, he stated that they have turned the primary investigation over to the State Police. He said they are working with their detectives as well as with uniformed police officers with the State Police.

“We’ve done a couple details to try and get more information,” explained Lindsay. “The State Police, with our insistence, have collected a great deal of evidence.”

Additionally, he said that he went out to local schools, such as the Monticello High School, Middle, and two Elementary schools, and spoke with the principals and vice-principals in regards to the children that may have been in view of or lived in the houses where the incidents took place.

The school is offering counseling for all the students if they are looking for it.

“We did a detail on Forestburgh Road and Terry Lane a couple of nights ago,” Lindsay recalled. “We stopped and spoke to everybody that passed. People were very receptive. As the Mayor said earlier, teamwork will help make the Village work.”

At the insistence of Village Attorney Michael Sussman, Lindsay also addressed the presence of patrol in complexes, particularly with Sleepy Hollow and Evergeen.

He also stated that they’re trying to put as much pressure on the area as possible by having the Sheriff’s Department patrol the area as well to thwart anyone from doing further harm. He also said the residents of both complexes, as well as those who addressed the Village have been extremely helpful.

He asked if anybody that has any information call their anonymous tip-line at 845-791-TIPS.

“If you have any information, even if you may think it trivial, please share it with us.”
