It can be hard to get around in a rural area when you don’t own a vehicle. The cost of transportation can be a large but necessary expense for many families.

In his August newsletter, County Manager Joshua Potosek talked about how 2022 has been a “momentous year” for Move Sullivan, the public bus system that was introduced in 2019.

According to a report by the Community Transportation Association of America, Rural poverty rates exceed urban poverty rates in all regions. Rural public transit can help reduce personal travel expenditures due to gas and other vehicle maintenance expenditures. The CTAA says that rural households spend about seven percent more of their budgets on transportation than urban households do.

Besides savings in transportation costs, rural public transportation can be an important force in supporting local economies by connecting residents (especially non-drivers) with local businesses and job opportunities.

Move Sullivan Rides are free for anyone and the county is launching two new routes. With Monticello, and specifically the Government Center, as the hub, Move Sullivan is expanding beyond its existing loops in Monticello, Fallsburg, Liberty, Woodridge and Rock Hill to include a loop serving Swan Lake and White Lake, and another serving Wurtsboro and Bloomingburg.

“In short, on any given weekday (except holidays), you’ll be able to hitch a ride from any of our largest population centers to healthcare offices, parks, stores, downtowns and developments. I truly believe this service has already been a game-changer for our residents, especially those who work hard but can’t afford their own cars,” Potosek said in his newsletter.

While it’s true that public transit serves a minor portion of total rural inhabitants, many of these trips taken are crucial. Public transit may allow for older residents and people with disabilities to access healthcare and basic shopping. It may assist a young person to reach school or a job. Tourists can visit and enjoy an area without needing to rent a car.

The need for public transit exists and it’s a good thing that the county provides a system to make that possible for many.
