ELDRED–– Eldred hosted Chapel Field in a regular season boys basketball matchup and managed an impressive but close 47-37 win over the Chapel Field Lions. After the win Coach Bill Furler told the Democrat, “I’ve been coaching this team for 4 years and Chapel Field beat us every time. This was our first win over them, and the guys played their butts off. We marked our matchup against Chapel Field on our calendar since day one and the players wanted this one badly. They’ve been the kings of Class D for a long time, so this makes us look really good for the rest of our games. Next game is Seward and we’re ready.”

The first quarter opened somewhat slow with both teams struggling to find the basket. But Eldred soon opened the flood gates with James Deyermond dominating in the paint, and Trai Kaufmann getting back-to-back steals converted into fast break layups. This allowed Eldred to go on a 12-point run and end the quarter with an 11 point lead.

Koen McGill opened the second quarter with a massive block into an upfield pass to Trai Kaufmann for an easy layup. It seemed like the second quarter would play out much the same as the first with Eldred dominating Chapel Field.

However, the Lions had other plans and went on a quick six-point run. Eldred’s James Deyermond scored six straight points on his own to increase Eldred’s lead to 23-12. Chapel Field finished off the half with a quick five-point run.

The third quarter was a constant back and forth. However, in the final minute of the quarter Chapel Field was able to score back-to-back on multiple plays. Eldred clung to a mere three-point lead.

Eldred’s James Deyermond opened the final quarter with an inside layup to get Eldred out of the danger zone. Trai Kaufmann followed this with an incredible drive through multiple Chapel Field defenders to put his team up 35-28 over the Lions. The Yellowjackets’ defense was able to hold Chapel Field scoreless in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter. Chapel Field was able to score to bring the game within reach again.

Eldred held onto a seven-point lead with only one minute left.  Deyermond of Eldred scored twice more to give Eldred a definitive 10-point lead and secure the win 47-37 over Chapel Field.

Deyermond would end the night with 26 and teammate, Trai Kaufman had 16. Eldred improves their record to 2-0 with this win.
