‘Angels’ in the Outfield

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS – After almost a year unable to play because of lockdown, Charlie’s Angels came back ready to claim victory against the ladies of D&D Contracting in a thrilling 19-9 win this past Wednesday.

It was obvious that both teams in the Sullivan County Women’s Softball League ‘A’ Division were there to win, but the game got off to a slow start. The opposing teams caught every fly and ground ball the batters hit. By the bottom of the second inning, D&D had a 3-2 lead on the Angels before the Angels scraped by three runs in the third.

However, the Angels were hungry to widen the gap on their one point lead. During the top of the fourth inning, the Angels hit run after run as the ball managed to slip past D&D, who scrambled in the outfield as the bases were quickly loaded. The Angels knocked in four runs, bringing the score to 9-4.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Angels decided to switch their pitcher from Cindy Ellmauer to their coach, Jo Walls, a legendary member of the team.

Walls struck out multiple batters in relief.

D&D made attempts to catch up, with Brooke Sapolsky hitting multiple triples throughout the latter half of the game and scored two more runs by the end of the sixth inning. But they were no match for the Angels. In the seventh inning, Lacey VanLeuven hit a home run, gaining two more runs for the Angels and bringing them to their 19 run total.

Although D&D fought to shorten the Angels lead, they only managed to pick up three more runs by the end of the contest.

Angels’ Ashley Herbert spoke to the Democrat after the game and said, “These girls are actually like family. It really was a team effort from all of us.”
