Tri-Valley’s Poje, Furman, and Ortiz Jimenez set milestones
BOSTON –– Tri-Valley athletes wrapped up their indoor track and field season with solid performances at the Nike Indoor Nationals in New York City and the New Balance Nationals Indoor in Boston. While competition was tough, Kane Poje, Anna Furman, and Matthew Ortiz Jimenez stood out with record-breaking and notable finishes.
Milestone Performances
Anna Furman (Sophomore) set a new Tri-Valley 2-Mile record at New Balance Nationals, clocking 10:55.38 and surpassing Heather Iatauro’s 2003 record. Iatauro was a junior when she set the previous mark, making Furman’s accomplishment as a sophomore even more impressive.
Matthew Ortiz Jimenez (Freshman) broke the school’s 60m record at Nike Nationals, running 7.75 seconds and beating Sean Messenger’s 2006 mark.
Other Tri-Valley Results
Kane Poje (Sophomore) put together a respectable showing in the Weight Throw, finishing 15th out of 22 at Nike Nationals, where 9 of the boys ahead of him were seniors. At New Balance Nationals, he placed 26th out of 70, with 18 seniors finishing ahead of him. Since throwing events are usually dominated by upperclassmen due to years of added strength and technique, Kane’s qualification for both National meets as a sophomore is an impressive achievement.
Van Furman competed in the 2-Mile at New Balance Nationals. Lily Schoonmaker (7th Grade) raced in the Middle School 800m at New Balance Nationals, gaining valuable experience against top competition.
Looking ahead, these athletes will aim to carry their momentum into the outdoor track and field season, building off their indoor success. With key experience at the national level, they will look to continue improving and competing at a high level this spring.
