WURTSBORO - Please join us on Saturday, April 9 for the Basha Kill Area Association Nature Watch Program Training. Sign-in is at 9:30 a.m., Training is from 10 a.m. - 12 noon held at the Mamakating Environmental Education Center, 762 South Road, Wurtsboro or on Zoom.

The Basha Kill Area Association seeks volunteers for their popular spring/summer Nature Watch Program. If you love nature, are willing to share your passion and have a few week-end hours to offer, then you’d make a great addition to the Team! In return, you will learn about your local bald eagle population, watch eaglets and other birds through high-powered scopes and meet people who share your interest. The program is likewise a great way for high school and college students to satisfy service-learning requirements.

This year’s Nature Watch Volunteer Training includes a keynote presentation, Furbearers of the Basha Kill, to be given by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. You will also learn about the technical details of Nature Watch. For the first time, volunteers can attend training from home via Zoom video call. Training will finish with a visit to the Nature Watch’s location at the DEC Basha Kill boat launch, across the street from 1131 South Road, Wurtsburo, to become familiar with spotting scope usage. New volunteers to attend this outdoor segment in person.

After training, volunteers sign up for three shifts. Each three hour shift will be on a Saturday or Sunday, from April 23 through June 26. If you love the Basha Kill and like to talk with others, this program is for you! To register in advance for April 9, request your Zoom link or for moredetails, call Kevin Keller at (845) 434-6209 or Maryallison Farley at (845) 888-0261. We ask that in-person attendees wear masks.

The Basha Kill Area Association is celebrating its 50th year as the watch dog group for the beautiful, 2,000 acre wetland full of diverse animals, birds and plants.
