Big Buck Season starts tomorrow in NY

SULLIVAN AND WAYNE COUNTY, PA – Will a new record be set in 2021?

That’s the question on every hunter’s mind as they head into the woods tomorrow morning for the opening day of Big Game rifle season in New York State.

Only one thing is for sure – it will take a magnificent buck to break the Sullivan County Democrat’s Big Buck All-time record set by Arthur Dross in 1999 with his 16-point buck that measured 89.

For the 48th year in a row, the Sullivan County Democrat Big Buck Contests will begin on the opening day of rifle season – which is tomorrow, November 20 and runs through December 12.

The Pennsylvania regular firearms season runs from November 27 through December 11 and Wayne County, PA harvests are eligible to enter the Democrat Big Buck Contests.

This year, the Democrat will be co-sponsoring the contest along with the Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs of Sullivan County (FOSCOSC).

“We thought this was an ideal partnership because of the many hunting clubs which belong to FOSCOSC,” Fred Stabbert III, publisher of the Democrat and sponsor of the Big Buck Contests, said. “We hope we have more entries than ever.”

This year looks especially promising for hunters, as clear weather is predicted for most of the weekend and many huge bucks have already been spotted throughout Sullivan County.

Great Prizes

Rod’s Taxidermy in Callicoon has been awarding free mounts to the Big Buck winner since the contest started in 1974.

“We started out with taxidermist Rod Smith,” Stabbert said. “And when he sold his business to Louis Milucky nearly 25 years ago Louis was gracious enough to continue the tradition.”

Milucky said he thinks this season is going to make a lot of hunters happy.

“I already have twice as many bucks as normal for the bow season,” Milucky said Wednesday afternoon. “I usually have about 24 bucks come in and I’m already up to 48.

“And there are some real trophies,” he said.

The Sullivan County Democrat and FOSCOSC will be providing four gifts certificates totalling more than $1000 to four lucky hunters.

To enter, just bring your deer to any one of the Democrat’s registering stations, which are listed in the ad on page 12B of this issue.

Also, the Big Buck winner will receive a free mount from Rod’s Taxidermy and a $150 check ($500 value).

Second place in the Big Buck Contest will receive a $75 check.

In the Heaviest Deer Contest, first place receives a $100 check, second $75 and third place $50.

“I would like to thank all of our measuring stations for the outstanding job they do and we hope 2021 is marked by many successful hunts and a safe season,” Stabbert said.

New This Year

Hunters in New York State will have two significant changes to the laws governing hunting.

The first is that hunters hours have changed to 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset.

Also, all hunters in the field must wear either fluorescent pink or orange.

This includes a hat, vest or jacket.
